"Each year some 3, 000 Tibetans escape from threats and persecution posed by China's invasion of Tibet. Tibetans journey across the Himalayas
through the Nangpa La Mountain Pass, at a height of 18,800 feet to reach
Nepal and India. Their trip takes months since they travel on foot and at
night to avoid Chinese patrols. Tibetans risk hypothermia, snow blindness,
falling down steep crevasses, dying of cold or hunger, or being shot to
death by Chinese border patrol."
