The Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament is an annual event that attracts local and international anglers competing to see who can catch the biggest marlin. The tournament is held
in the fall of each year, the precise date varies according to the moon. There is usually rainfall at
that time of the year and the inevitable trampling which is associated with outdoor events. This
may however be seen by hoteliers as insignificant compared to having their hotel rooms fully
occupied and a positive bank balance. The regulations indicate that marlin fishing should cause
no harm to marine life. In addition, the marlins caught, which are under certain poundage, should
be tagged and released back into the waters. There is no guideline regarding the distance of the
vessels relative to the fish so breeding sites are usually disturbed.
Local fishers participate in a one-day local canoe race during a tournament. This is done while
the professional anglers get needed rest. Besides their participation in this activity and the short-
term employment offered to a few; the local people usually retreat at this time of the year making
space at the local hot spots (restaurants and night clubs) for the influx of visitors. A major point
of contention with some residents is the overcrowding of the narrow streets and the prostitution
and illicit sexual activities that take place in the town during this period.
In addition to the fishing competition and the canoe race, lots of parties and receptions - with
high alcohol consumption keep the action going for the week. The Portland Environment
Protection Association ensures that there are adequate numbers of garbage receptacles to collect
all the garbage produced by the tournament. This does not however prevent local fish vendors
from disposing of their waste in the sea or wherever else they deem suitable.
