People would swim to the bottom of Lake Tucurui and use hydraulic chainsaws to cut the trees. Once the trees are cut, they shoot up to the waters surface. Trees falling up is a term used because of the trees that shoot upward to the top of the lake. This situation helps the local economy because the wood from cleared rainforests is turned into products that can be sold throughout the world. The algae on the trees help keep the tree in its shape.
