Typhoons are created in water where wind blows in areas of the ocean where the water's warm. If the typhoon goes near land then the water starts to lose its rotation because it's disturbed by land.

Example: if you have ever twirled a spoon inside a cup you would see a typhoon shaped Circle start to form inside the cup. If you put something solid and big enough inside the cup it will stop the formation.
