The primary reason is politics, with communist leaders running the country, closing in the economy and running it in a terrible manner, while in meantime creating tensions with very powerful countries. The country has been isolated, with a handful of friendly countries around the world, none of which is nearby except for Cuba. The opponents of Venezuela have found it very easy to sanction and block it, badly injuring its economy, and the terrible economic conditions have led to social unrest and violence.
