Water that drains on the east side of the Continental Divide flows toward the Atlantic Ocean. Therefore, most rivers on central U.S.A flow into the Gulf of Mexico via the Mississippi river. The term "wrong-way" rivers was coined because the natural flow of the river contrasts with the areas in need of water, where the flow benefits the already humid and damp areas in the southeast regions, and disadvantages the dry regions in the northwest.
