The Republic of China (ROC) occupies the Pacific island of Taiwan and a few
neighboring islands off the coast of mainland China (the People's Republic of
China, PRC). The ROC is a democracy, while the PRC is a Communist state.
The division between the ROC and the PRC is a result of the Chinese Civil War
(1927 to 1950), which was fought between the Chinese Nationalist Party and
the Communist Party of China. After the long civil war, the Communist Party
of China won control of the mainland, and the previously ruling Nationalist
Party leaders and followers fled to Taiwan, establishing a one-party state in
Taiwan.
Until the 1990s, both governments claimed to be the legitimate government
