Canadian Shield

Location: Covers most of Ontario and Quebec

Physical Features: Relatively flat with numerous lakes and thin soil over rock. Covered by boreal forest in the south and tundra in the north. Farming is poor because of the thin soil.

Population factors: Plentiful water and minerals. Most suitable for hydroelectric and mining activities

St. Lawrence Lowlands

Location: South of the Canadian Shield, north of the Great Lakes and on both sides of the St. Lawrence River.  

Physical Features: Huge amounts of fertile soil, with flat plains and small hills. Well-suited to farming because of excellent soils and warm climate.

Population factors: Ideal for urban development. Comprises 1.4 % of Canada's area but half its population.
