The seismic methods depend on the velocity of acoustical energy in earth materials i.e generation of pulse waves. The wave theory of time travel and reflection, deflection and absorption are applied to the principal methods of gravity and electric technique. Some convectional geophysical techniques are derived and defined as  

1. Near-surface applications: For understanding the geology of rocks at greater depths for engineering and environmental studies.

2. Hydrocarbon exploration: For the discovery of various oils and petroleum reserves.

3. Mineral exploration: geologic mapping and geochemical exportation of the ocean deeps.

4. Crustal studies: like the origin of the earth and slabs of rocks for studying the discontinues in earth at various layers.

I'm pretty sure it's c. extremely gradual but not 100% sure though.
