The middle part of the country relies on agriculture and is mostly rural, which means that a few people manage large expanses of land, and that cities and other industries are not very developed. Finally, a third reason is historical. Settlers first arrived to the United States from the east, and afterwards from the west coast. However, moving towards the interior was difficult, which meant that the area was only further developed in recent years.
