Do you agree with this statement? why or why not? tree islands in the everglades are a key component on maintaining the diversity within the ecosystem. tree islands are formed by the deposits of nutrients in one area. nutrients are deposited in a variety of ways. such ways include the flow of the wave in a single direction, wind particles settlement in one area, and bird and animal droppings. these methods cause for tree islands to have a high level of phosphorus. according to the article, maintaining tree islands in the everglades, the higher the phosphorus content the larger the tree island is. tree islands are formed in oval and tear drop shapes, with studies showing that this is caused by the everglades water flow from north to south. the heads of the islands contain the highest levels of phosphorus and the tail containing the lowest levels of phosphorus. increase of phosphorus causes an increase in primary production which has a direct effect of biomass and the different types of vegetation because at different amounts of phosphorus in soil at different ares of the islands, the different types of plants those soils will host. for example, with highlands and high concentrations of phosphorus the soil with host tall flora such as trees and for low lands with low concentrations of phosphorus, the soil will host smaller flora such as saw grass and bushes. tree islands are beginning to diminish due to the alterations of land and hydrology by human impacts. this is a direct cause of the loss of biodiversity in the everglades. humans are impacting the hydrology of the everglades with levees which us control water flow. this may be for our safety of floods for surrounding communities but we must mimic nature as close as possible to maintain biodiversity in ecosystems. biogeochemical hot spots are tree islands with a phosphorus levels that accelerate 100 times than smaller tree islands. these biogeochemical hot spots are a key in the diversity of the everglades. if the hot spots are diminished, phosphorus levels are low which will directly affect life of the everglades. as we have read, phosphorus and restoring nutrients plays a key role in the health of the everglades communities. ecologist aim to keep phosphorous at historic levels. i agree that the everglades should be maintained at historic levels of phosphorous and other nutrients to preserve the ecosystem and its biodiversity. i agree with this view point because studies have shown that there are higher levels of phosphorus on larger islands, therefore the main component of formation of tree islands is from the settlement of phosphorus.
