Mexico City is the capital city of Mexico. It is by far the largest city in the country, the biggest city in the western hemisphere, and the second biggest city in the whole world, with only Tokyo being larger.

The city has been formed on the place of a lake actually. When the Europeans came in what is now Mexico, they encountered the Aztecs, and with it their capital Tenochtitlan, which was located in the lake itself, being on a small island. The Aztec civilization was destroyed though, and the Europeans saw the lake as good location for creating their own settlement as the area provided lot of good conditions for living.

In order to make the settlement, the Europeans started and managed to drain the whole lake. After it was drained, lot of ground and rocks were brought in it, and the former lake good filled with them to a certain point. Once this was done, the settlement was formed and people flocked into it. Being on an attractive location, more and more people were settling in it, so the city was rapidly growing, quickly becoming one of the largest cities in the world.
