El Nino is one of the two parts of the natural weather phenomenon known as the Southern Oscillation. El Nino basically is a warming up of the waters of the eastern part of the Pacific, pilling up warmth and moisture. As it spreads out, El Nino starts to impact whole continents and even has a global impact on the climate. While South America, Central America, and up to California, there's a significant increase in the rainfall, thus also slightly lower temperatures because of it, the northwestern part of the Pacific experiences the total opposite. The winters in the northwest are actually warmer on average and drier, resulting much less snowfall. This affects badly the economy of this parts as there are numerous winter tourist centers, but when El Nino is in action they do not have enough snowfall, or even when they get it often melts very quickly.
