The oceanic plate subducts below the continental plate because it is lower and denser. As it does, near the subduction zone lot of volcanic activity occurs, often resulting in volcanic island chains.

- Continental-Continental convergence; this subtype is a convergent plate boundary between two continental plates. As they collide, the smaller plate moves very slowly below the large plate, lifting up the surrounding area and creating large mountain chains.

- Oceanic-Oceanic convergence; this subtypeis a convergent plate boundary between two oceanic plates. One of the oceanic plates moves below the other, creating subduction zone. This subduction zone also creates a lot of volcanic activity, resulting in underwater volcanoes, or volcanic islands.
