The purpose that geological timeline serve and reason scientist do make it, is portray the history of the Earth.

A geological timeline can be regarded as a system which gives the relationship between geological strata as well as events based on chronological time. This helps the scientist in studying events as well as frequency of events to Know if there are chances of recurrence of that particular event.Examples of this event could be eclipse of sun that usually occur at some point in time.The geologic time scale also helps in portraying the history of the Earth such as rocks and fossils.

A Geological timeline can also be regarded as a Geological timescale. It is preferably called a Geological Timescale(GTS).

The geologic timeline was developed using both relative dating and absolute dating techniques.

In relative dating, events are documented based on the relationship of rock sequences and fossils to each other.

Absolute dating gives an exact date using some techniques to ascertain them. The technique adopted is isotopic dating of radioactive elements trapped in rocks.
