When you use "être", the past participle always agrees with the subject.

example =

Il est parti

Ils sont partis ..

Elle est partie...

Elles sont parties

When you use "avoir", the past participle never agrees with the subject.

It  agrees only with the dirrect object if, and only if the direct object is beafore the verb.

example =

Elle  a posé sa veste sur la chaise.   direct object = sa veste

La veste qu'elle a posée sur la chaise ...direct object before the verb posée

OR with a direct object pronoun which replave "veste"

Elle l'a posée sur la chaise = l' = la veste

another example

Il  a mis ses chaussures.

Il les a mises

les chaussures qu'il a mises
