In the story "Two Kinds," we see that the daughter, Jing-mei, changes greatly throughout the course of the story. At the beginning of the story, Jing-mei is very angry towards her mother. This is a consequence of the mother's deep desire to turn her daughter into a genius or a prodigy.

The situation between the two of them becomes more and more complicated as time goes by. Jing-mei begins to play the piano, but she is not talented, and does not like it. Eventually, she has to play at a recital, and it goes terribly wrong, but her mother insists on her continuing her lessons. This leads Jing-mei to be even more angry towards her mother, and the resentment hurts their relationship even further.

However, towards the end of the story, Jing-mei has become more mature, and she understands her mother better. She is also able to understand that the intentions of her mother were good, and that she was never truly disappointed on her.
