Sample Response: Brooks introduces the voice of the poem using two lines “The Pool Players./Seven at The Golden Shovel.” After the introduction, she uses the same number of syllables in every line except for the first and the last. After each “We,” there are always two syllables. However, not every “We” is read the same way. Brooks breaks up each line before a complete thought is finished: “We real cool. We/Left school. We.” This line break, called enjambment, causes the reader to pause after each “We” that ends a line and linger on that “We.” This makes us wonder about the “We” and whether they are really cool as they think they are. After each “We” comes a verb and a noun, which describes what “real cool” really means. Many of these definitions are also alliterations, which sound pleasing to the ear. One can almost visualize the pool players explaining what it means to be cool while striking a pose and talking in a smoky tone. In other words, the seven aren’t just telling us what it means to be cool, they’re doing their best to “sound” cool too.
