Loyalty is one of the most important themes in the play Nakamitsu. In this play, a samurai's servant is given a task that tests his loyalty: he is ordered to kill the samurai's son. As he does not want to, he decides to kill his own son instead and pretend that the corpse is the corpse of his master. The servant was faced with conflicting loyalties, but chose the path that better honoured his duty towards his master.
