When we look at the constitution, it is stated what the eagle is used for.  We see that the eagle was first of all chosen because it can “see afar.”  And, we also see that the reason the eagle is chosen (because of its farsightedness) is because it can see “evil approaching” or “any danger threatening” and, therefore, provide warning.  As such, the role the eagle plays is that of a guardian or protector.

From the Iroquois constitution, the eagle played the role of a duard or protector.

The Eagle may be considered as a symbol for great strength, leadership and vision.

The Iroquois were a powerful northeast Native American confederacy who were known during the colonial years to the French as the Iroquois League, and later as the Iroquois Confederacy.
