Allusion.

An allusion is a reference to another piece of literature of history. The reason Mr. Smith chose this allusion is because he is trying to show the importance of the syllabus. In the Christian faith, the Bible is the book of all books. It tells Christians how to live their lives in a Godly manner. It is to be used to answer questions about life and provide rules to follow. A class syllabus is similar in that it outlines how the class will go. It provides an overarching theme to the class, lists the necessary materials, details the class rules and expectations, as well as answers any other questions about how the class may function. Mr. Smith also uses this allusion because the Bible is something to be respected, read, and revisited. He is wanting his students to do the same - not just throw it out or lose it.
