Friedrich Engels was a German philosopher, social scientist, journalist and businessman. He is known for founding Marxist theory together with Karl Marx. He also co-authored The Communist Manifesto.

Engels was extremely critical of industralization and capitalism, and in this excerpt he illustrates why that is the case. He believes that industrialization has caused enormous problems for the population, in particular poor workers.
