Which of these passages reflects a type of conflict that is seen in children’s stories? barney and his best friend, rob, spot an unidentified flying object as they are out stargazing at night. they are excited, thinking they may see an alien. little do they know that their wish will be fulfilled very soon. rosie and her friends venture into the beautiful garden lured by the beautiful, fragrant flowers. as rosie bends to pluck a flower, a little caterpillar tells her to run away from the garden. just as she is about to dash out, a witch appears. the witch hypnotizes rosie and her friends and takes them to a castle in the woods. jason and louise are out on a hiking trip. they are far ahead of the rest of the group. louise spots strange flowers that seem to be growing in a particular pattern in the forest. together with jason, she follows the flower trail. they are engrossed in the mysterious flowers, but soon realize that they are lost in the forest.

Read the excerpt from "mother tongue." lately, i’ve been giving more thought to the kind of english my mother speaks. like others, i have described it to people as “broken” or “fractured” english. but i wince when i say that. it has always bothered me that i can think of no other way to describe it other than “broken,” as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked a certain wholeness and soundness. what best supports the inference that tan believes nonstandard english is no less valid than standard english? tan spends a lot of time thinking about her mother’s “fractured” english. tan has trouble thinking of descriptive words when she is writing. tan’s american education makes it difficult for her to understand her mother. tan winces when she describes her mother’s english as “broken.”
