Rip Van Winkle falls asleep for twenty years, and when he wakes up, he realizes that a long time has passed. He returns to his village and learns that he missed the American Revolution. Most of his friends have been killed in the war. Although he claims to be loyal to King George III, he soon learns everyone is loyal to George Washington now. Many other aspects of his life have changed. His wife has died, and his children have grown up. His daughter is married and has a child.
