Your english teacher says that you need to write on anything within the broad topic of "complex processes." remember and reference the chart above to narrow down this huge topic to something that could be discussed in a four to six-page paper. write a paragraph of at least 125 words stating your final choice for a topic. be sure to mention why you think your topic is suitable given the audience, purpose, and occasion of the composition that you would write.

Write approximately 100 words reflecting on your 7-question reading strategy activity. how correct were your first two predictions? what questions worked for you within that activity? what questions didn't? were these reading strategies something you do unconsciously when you read anyway, or were they very foreign ideas? the more you know about how you read, the better you become as a reader. what did you learn about yourself as a reader?

Read the excerpt from "mother tongue." lately, i’ve been giving more thought to the kind of english my mother speaks. like others, i have described it to people as “broken” or “fractured” english. but i wince when i say that. it has always bothered me that i can think of no other way to describe it other than “broken,” as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked a certain wholeness and soundness. what best supports the inference that tan believes nonstandard english is no less valid than standard english? tan spends a lot of time thinking about her mother’s “fractured” english. tan has trouble thinking of descriptive words when she is writing. tan’s american education makes it difficult for her to understand her mother. tan winces when she describes her mother’s english as “broken.”
