The answer here is  the last one.The narrator is afraid he has been locked in a tomb.Then, all he will see if he opens his eyes is darkness.This darkness, as he knows he has been condemned by the inquisition,announces his death , which  will be cruel and awful, possibly by hanging.Therefore , he is afraid to open his eyes.
