Chinua Achebe is one of the most influential writers in Africa. His book entitled Things Fall Apart gave him  the Margaret Wong Memorial Prize, which is a prestigious award. Aside from this, he also garnered several awards from Nigeria, England, United States, etc., the biggest of which is the Man Booker International Prize. Things Fall Apart is now considered a classic and clearly Achebe's masterpiece. With all these achievements, there's no wonder why some considered him to be the father of African literature.
