THE 4 SENTENCE STRUCTURES

The simple sentence is one of the four basic sentence structures. The other structures are the compound sentence, the complex sentence, and the compound-complex sentence.

a compound sentence can be thought of as two (or more) simple sentences joined by a conjunction and/or an appropriate mark of punctuation.

 a complex sentence is a sentence that contains an independent clause (or main clause) and at least one dependent clause. Put another way, a complex sentence is made up of a main clause with one or more dependent clauses joined to it with an appropriate conjunction or pronoun.

a compound-complex sentence is a sentence with two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. Also known as a complex-compound sentence.
