The "Nervous stomachs" phrase is an indicator that the group of friends is highly stressed, anxious and under a lot of pressure, because when a person is highly stressed, it usually affects its body as well, a nervous stomach is an example of that. Clearly, the group of friends is extremely worried they may not finish the task on time because of the bad consequences that may have.
