This excerpt creates suspense by making the reader wonder how Mr. Hyde had managed to be seen by so few people. Why people who had seen Mr. Hyde could only agree on one point. When Mr. Hyde would see any of his family members again. What people would do if they actually got a long look at Mr. Hyde.
