She saw, I suppose, the doubt in my face, for she put the rosary round my neck,
and said, “For your mother’s sake,” and went out of the room. I am writing up this
part of the diary whilst I am waiting for the coach, which is, of course, late; and
the crucifix is still round my neck. Whether it is the old ladys fear, or the many
ghostly traditions of this place, or the crucifix itself, I do not know, but I am not feeling
nearly as easy in my mind as usual.
My homicidal maniac is of a peculiar kind. I shall have to invent a new classification
for him, and call him a zoöphagous (life-eating) maniac; what he desires is to absorb
as many lives as he can, and he has laid himself out to achieve it in a cumulative way.
He gave many flies to one spider and many spiders to one bird, and then wanted
a cat to eat the many birds.
Besides, it was all so confused; it seemed only a moment from his coming into the room
till both his arms were round me, and he was kissing me. I am very, very happy, and
I don’t know what I have done to deserve it. I must only try in the future to show that
I am not ungrateful to God for all His goodness to me in sending to me such a lover,
such a husband, and such a friend.
