Chapter 3:

1. What is newspeak? What is the purpose of newspeak? Give some specific examples and explain their significance.
2. Who is Syme? Choose one quote that you believe defines him as a character and explain why you chose it. What function do you believe he serves in this novel? Why does Orwell include him? Explain your answer.
3. Why do you think dystopian novels so often attempt to destroy or remove literature or art from their societies? How does it differ from the methods used in Brave New World?

1. What are the rules regarding s. e.x and marriage for members of the Party in Oceania? What does Orwell seem to be satirizing or criticizing about this society? What does he suggest about our own society?
2. Choose two quotes from Winston’s experience with the prostitute. Explain the tone of these quotes and use specific words within as examples to demonstrate your claim.
Chapter 7:
1. How does Prole life differ from the life of the Party members? Why is this the case? Cite specific examples from the text.
2. Analyze Winston’s quote: “Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled the cannot become conscious.” Do you agree or disagree with Winston?
3. What is the current understanding of what happened in the past? How does that differ from our current understanding of the past in our own world? What does George Orwell seem to be commenting on or criticizing? (hint: look up capitalism and communism)
4. What happened during the purges of the Revolution? Who are Jones, Aaronson and Rutherford? Analyze the song on page 77.
5. Explain the quote: “Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows.”

1. What does “ownlife” mean? What does Winston’s “ownlife” consist of?
2. Summarize Winston’s conversation with the old prole man in the pub. What
did we find out about the past? What can you infer about life as a prole?
3. Make an inference about the meaning of the nursery rhyme in this chapter.
What do you think it means? Why do you think Orwell includes it?
4. Describe Winston’s interaction with the dark-haired girl. Why do you think
she has appeared so often throughout the book. Make a prediction about what may happen in the future.
