1. Individuality of style – music often was so idiosyncratic that listeners could identify the composer easily.

2. Expressive aims and subjects – themes were flamboyance, intimacy, longing, and melancholy

3. Nationalism and Exoticism – composers used folk songs, dances, legends for nationalism
Exoticism was the outgrowth of nationalism to other cultures and attracted people by things remote, picturesque and mysterious

4. Program Music – narrative and descriptive kind that is intended to express a story or images that depict the theme and scenes in a literary text.
Ex. The soundtrack of the motion picture, Titanic

5. Expressive Tone color – symphonies were much larger and had more instruments.
Piano became an important instrument . Instrument added to orchestra include new percussion, horns, and bass clarinet.

6. Colorful harmony – unstable harmonies that create an unresolved sense of yearning or mystery

7. Expanded range of dynamics, pitch, and tempo
