However, sun exposure is something to be taken in moderation, even if it makes you look and feel good in the short term. The sun produces ultraviolet (UV) rays that, over the course of many years, damage our skin. Unfortunately, people associate negative skin changes with the natural aging process, while many of those changes are actually the cumulative effect of UV rays over a person's lifetime.
Overexposure to the sun and UV rays can cause anything from freckles to skin cancer. One of the most common effects is damage to our elastin, which are fibers in our skin. Damage to elastin causes our skin to stretch, sag, and wrinkle; it also causes us to bruise more easily and heal more slowly. The effects of the sun are typically not noticeable until later on in life, after the damage has been done. Although deep wrinkles may be unsightly, they are not harmful. Skin cancer, on the other hand, can be deadly, and cases in the United States are on the rise.
Regardless, people ignore simple preventive measures such as sunscreen and sunglasses with UV protection. Since people do not always make the connection between the sun and their health, they do not take the necessary precautions to stay well.
