Why is there two different types of lettering cursive and print?

before computers and typing was invented they used letters to communicate. in those letters people were taught cursive, basically the "correct" way to write and it was easy to spell out each word quickly. overtime we started using computers and we didn't really need to use cursive as much since typing is just as fast if not faster than cursive. depending on who you ask, they have different importance. older people will say that cursive is necessary when writing letters and you should never "print". others say that it doesn't really matter however cursive looks nicer. annnd then there are those who can't read cursive well and think it takes up too much time learning on how to do it.

this is just from what i've heard and understood. I could be incorrect but it's a pretty good hunch :)
