Autumn.

Of all the places I’ve lived, I think Ohio and Idaho had the nicest autumns. Ohio for its profusion of autumnal arboreal color and Idaho (southern Idaho, at least) for its paucity of rain and cloudy weather, and the radiant clarity of the air.

See, what I like most about autumn, besides the pleasant colors and the cool temperatures, is the way the light falls. The Earth is tilting northward on its axis. The sun, which was high overhead in summer, now swings low in the southern sky. Its rays slant diagonally across the land, lending a different (and in my opinion, pleasant) character to everything they touch. Noontide all but disappears, and the late autumn and early winter days seem to transition immediately from early morning to late afternoon. I find the resulting temporal disorientation immensely pleasing for some reason.

What differentiates autumn from spring, in my mind, is the reassuring knowledge that this temporal disorientation and the cold temperatures will only intensify as autumn progresses into winter (not to mention the comforting evocations which autumn and winter coax from my imagination—hot cocoa, roaring fires, holiday feasts, family togetherness, good flying weather, etc.)—whereas my enjoyment of spring and its manifold beauties is tinctured by the knowledge that the sun is climbing ever higher into the sky, and temperatures will only increase until the asphalt is hot enough to fry eggs on, and everything will soon be hot and ugly and unpleasant again.

It’s only a subjective prejudice—perhaps even an aesthetic conceit—on my part. But it nevertheless exerts a powerful hold on my psyche.

And that’s why I love autumn. The weather gets cooler, the holidays are coming, the trees are getting prettier, and everything just looks more beautiful and magical with the sun lower in the sky.

Oh, and another thing: my birthday is in autumn. So there.
