A Summary of “Pyramus and Thisbe”
from Metamorphoses by Ovid

About 1,500 years before Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet, the Roman poet Ovid wrote the narrative poem Metamorphoses, which includes many ancient myths. Ovid tells the story of Pyramus and Thisbe, who are two lovers in the Middle Eastern city of Babylon. They live in connected houses, and they whisper their secret love for each other through cracks in the walls. However, they are forbidden by their parents from marrying one another because of their parents' rivalry. They arrange to meet near a tomb under a mulberry tree and profess their love in person. Thisbe arrives first but is startled by a lioness with blood on its mouth from a recent meal. Thisbe runs away and mistakenly drops her wedding veil. When Pyramus arrives, he sees Thisbe’s veil is torn, has blood on it, and is surrounded by lion tracks. Pyramus assumes that a wild animal has killed Thisbe, and he is devastated. In despair, he purposely falls on the point of his sword. When Thisbe returns, she finds Pyramus dead under the mulberry tree. In terrible sadness, Thisbe cries out to the gods, then decides to take her own life with Pyramus’s sword.
