Add quotation marks or underline the titles of literary works where necessary. In history class, we often learn about literature and media and how it affected American history. One such work was The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. His work, along with the work of other muckrakers such as Ida Tarbel (The History of the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey) and Jacob Riis (How the Other Half Lives) helped to improve American society. In other ways, individuals have used the written word to help America. William Lloyd Garrison started the newspaper The Liberator to help the abolition of slavery. He also supported many African-Americans who made speeches to help the abolitionist cause, such as Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth. Although Sojourner Truth helped the condition of slaves, she also advanced women’s rights with her speech Ain’t I a Woman? that she delivered at the Seneca Falls Convention. In other ways, individuals have used the written word to protest the actions of the U. S. government. Langston Hughes wrote poems such as The Landlord and Let America Be America Again to bring an artistic expression to the problems with the black community. Arthur Miller wrote the play The Crucible, which tells the story of the Salem Witch Trials, but is actually an allegory for the actions of Senator Joseph McCarthy and the House UN-American Activities Committee during the Red Scare of the 1950’s. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote the book The Great Gatsby to illustrate the culture of the 1920’s, but he also wrote many short stories too, such as Winter Dreams and The Diamond as Big as the Ritz. Even as recently as 1990, people are publishing works to improve American society. Tim O’Brien wrote many short stories, such as Ambush, The Things They Carried, and Friends, about his experiences in Vietnam, and then in 1990, he published all his stories in one book titled The Things They Carried.
