A. A heroine named Vera is visited by a muse, Calista. The muse tells her she must bring back the Treasure of the Mountain for the queenā€”all 300 tons of itā€”but first she must slay the giant magic dog, Fangomous. Vera sets out and meets up with Bradley, her childhood friend whoā€™s now a brave soldier. Bradley helps her slay Fangomous but is mortally wounded in the fight. Vera is very sad, but she takes out her magic doohickey and whips up a flying carpet to put all the 300 tons of treasure on and 1000 elves to load it up. The elves offer her a ride, but sheā€™d rather walk, carrying Bradleyā€™s body back with her. Along the way, she encounters Sliva, the Keeper of Evil. But Calista had warned her of this, and she takes out a special stone, sets it on fire with her magic doohickey, and hurls it at Sliva, who vaporizes on the spot. Vera returns home in triumph. B. A hero named Howard decides to climb the highest mountain in the land. His friends offer him all sorts of magic thingsā€”special walking sticks with the power to propel him up the mountain, magic clothing to keep him safeā€”but he refuses all help. He sets out alone. The road is harder than he thought, and since heā€™s only human, he gets very tired and has to stop. After heā€™s rested, he trudges on up the mountain and meets a mountain lion whoā€™s really an evil sorcerer. Howard wishes heā€™d brought some of the magic things his friends offered him, so he could fight the sorcerer. He gets scared and tries to run away. The sorcerer lures him back, offering Howard fine riches and beautiful women. After some thought, Howard decides to go over to the Dark Side.
