Students Akash Krishnan and Matthew Fernandez were inspired by a movie. They saw a robot that could detect
when a person was getting upset. Krishnan and Fernandez examined current technology. They discovered some
robots could really do this. The students then developed their own program using over 18,000 files of human
speech. The voices expressed several different emotions. The teens' program identifies emotion in the speaker's
voice. It can correctly recognize emotions 6 out of 10 times. The old program was correct only 4 out of 10 times.
Krishnan and Fernandez believe that their work could be used in computer phone programs. It would allow the
computer to determine if a caller is becoming angry.
