unity.
I agree with Thomas Jefferson that there is a natural aristocracy among human
beings, based on virtue and talent. A natural aristocrat is a person who shows
genuine concern for his fellow human beings and has the wisdom as well as
ability to help them improve the quality of their lives. He is the kind of person to
whom you would entrust your most important concerns because his decisions
would be honest rather than self-serving. A natural aristocrat cannot be bought
or manipulated. He will not promise what he cannot deliver
. But when he makes
a promise, he has virtue backed up by talent to fulfill it. Unfortunately, few
political leaders today are natural aristocrats, because early in their ambitious
careers they become
beholden to those powers that helped them up the politi-
cal ladder
b. In medieval society, physical strength and animal cunning were the most
admired characteristics of human beings, but since the invention of gun-
powder, we have come to value other qualities more highly. Now that even
a physically weak person can be made strong by carrying a gun, other inge-
nuities have become the marks of heroic people. Of course, boxing requires
physical strength and animal cunning, yet many people today admire good
boxers. The qualities most admired today are intellectual acumen, leader-
ship ability, artistic talent, and social adjustment. I find it distressing that we
do not prize goodness as much as we should. After all, Lincoln's outstand-
ing feature was goodness. If a person is not good, he is not admirable. The
tournament and personal combat have been replaced by the university, the
political arena, the stage, and the personality inventory as testing grounds
for heroes.

" "swam," said rainsford. "i found it quicker than walking through the jungle." the general sucked in his breath and smiled. "i congratulate you," he said. "you have won the game." rainsford did not smile. "i am still a beast at bay," he said, in a low, hoarse voice. "get ready, general zaroff." the general made one of his deepest bows.
