How does theme develop in The Crucible? Consider that conflicts in the play lead directly to themes. For example, noting that envy and jealousy are a conflict
makes you pay attention mto how the play answers this problem. That answer is a theme, which includes the conflict
(conceptual problem) and a truth or value statement about that conflict. Thematic Statement: "Envy and jealousy of
one's neighbors is the true evil in Salem."
As you read and listen to Act II, find two passages that develop a theme in the play. Make sure to write the page
number next to the passage and quote it exactly in the left hand column. In the right column write complete sentence
responses to explain how the theme is developed in that passage.
If you use the audio link, Act II starts at 1:06.
Guidelines
- Write in complete sentences with academic language. (Do not use T or you'.)
Quote from the play exactly in the left column.
The right column should have more writing than the left column
- Identify what is going on in the passage, Interpret what it means, and Connect this deeper meaning to the theme of
the play
