the small apples look ready to eat but watch out. If you bite into them,
your mouth will pucker up. By August, the sour taste has gone and our
apples are sweet and juicy.
I've been eating apples all week. It's fun to walk into the backyard and
pick my own snack off the tree. But today we need to pick the rest of
the apples before they begin to spoil. We'll keep some for eating plain,
and the rest we'll use for all kinds of projects.
First, Mom will take a bushel of apples and peel them. She'll cut them
into quarters and toss them into her big Iron kettle. When the kettle is
half full, she'll cover the apples with water and sprinkle in some lemon
Juice and nutmeg. She'll simmer the apples on the stove all afternoon,
In the evening, we'll have fresh applesauce with our dinner.

and a mouth on one side of each apple. She'll stick two cloves into each
face to make the eyes. When the faces are complete, she'll put the
