During my first two tries at bat, I struck out. This time, I was determined to
bat it out of the park. We were behind 2 to 1 in the eighth inning. My palms felt sweaty. I swung at the first ball, which went low and inside. I swung at the second, but I barely made contact and it fouled off to the right. I licked my lips, hunkered down, and tried to look calm. I focused on the ball. The stadium was silent. Finally, the third pitch slid off my bat with a satisfying
crack. I knew without looking it was gone. The crowd cheered; I ran home.
