Dr. Percy Spencer invented the microwave oven in 1946. The idea came to him when a chocolate candy bar melted in his pocket. Dr. Spencer had been testing something called a magnetron, which uses microwaves. When working next to the magnetron, the microwaves caused the candy bar in his pocket to heat up and then melt very quickly. His pocket, however, was not hot. His clothes were not burned.
Dr. Spencer grew curious and decided to try heating something else. It was popcorn. He placed popcorn kernels near the magnetron and turned it on. The popcorn jumped and popped into the air and all over the floor.
