Document 2;This political cartoon from the 1880s reflects the sometimes vicious anti-Chinese sentiment of white Americans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In the 1850s, many Chinese workers moved to the United States. They worked in the goldmines, on farms and in factories. Chinese immigrants also were important in the building of railroads in the American West. As Chinese workers grew successful in the U. S., many started their own businesses. As the numbers of Chinese workers increased, so did anti-Chinese attitudes from other workers. This resulted in a law passed by Congress in 1882 called the Chinese Exclusion Act.
