Literal and Figurative Language Read the passage below then list FIVE words or expressions that you feel are figurative. Explain why you feel this way about each example.

The youngest child in a family is oftentimes the most fortunate member of any family. Like a chick encased in an egg, he has no need to fear. However, this avalanche of love and affection does not always result in an exemplary or model child. In fact, there are too many unflattering reports that suggest that this attention backfires more times than not. The unfortunate result? A brat!! An egotistical, controlling tyrant whose screams make even the family’s champion shudder; yet he is often viewed as the family’s pride and joy. It is this babe, so innocent, and so beautiful, who dictates when the family eats, sleeps or is entertained. Furthermore as time progresses, other members are entangled in his upkeep. Older siblings, are soon enslaved with his supervision and defense and oftentimes they become resentful or vindictive.
