Thematic Connection: The Pioneer Spirit When he uses the phrase "the right stuff," Tom Wolfe is describing a certain set of personal
characteristics exhibited by the early astronauts that might also be described as the pioneer
spirit. You're familiar with a number of pioneers, from the early explorers of the Americas, to
the pioneers who settled the American west, to the astronauts who lifted off during the Ameri-
can space program. How would you describe the pioneer spirit? What occupations in today's
world require those same qualities?
