I was always a bit nervous about my athletic ability until a friend asked me to go waterskiing with him. At first, I hoped my parents would say no because I was afraid of looking silly, but they thought it was a great idea. I got more worried when I saw the massive 150 hp motor on the back of the boat waiting next to the dock. Bill went first to show what to do. He sliced through the water, leaped over the wake, and sailed off the ski jump, landing perfectly. All too soon, it was my turn. I jumped in the water, pulled on the skis, and signaled I was ready. The boat surged forward, catching me off guard; I swallowed half the lake. Bill’s dad stopped the boat. Patiently, Bill and his dad showed me once more how to use my arms and legs. This time I was ready, and I suddenly found myself standing on skis zipping over the water. The water looked like glass because there were no waves or wind that day. I yelled, “Yahoo!” Carefully, I made my way across the wake, and I didn’t fall! When we returned to the dock, I laughed and celebrated. Bill and his relatives shouted, “You were great!” After others had their turns, I was ready to go again. I suddenly realized that I didn’t have to be an expert to enjoy a sport. 1.
