The Olympic games of today have their origins in ancient Greece. Despite some similarities, there are major differences between the Olympics of the past and those
of today. First of all, in the ancient games, there was only one winner. No awards
were given for second or third place finishes. Next, athletes were rewarded as much
for style as they were for speed. Sprinters, for example, were not only expected to
win a race; they were also expected to do so with grace and skill. A final difference is
that ancient Greeks competed only with each other, not with the past. In other
words, athletes strove only to beat their current competitors and cared little about
surpassing "record" times and distances
